Warum es funktioniert

Kalter Wein, nichts verwässert

Gefrorener Edelstahl nimmt einem eingeschenkten Glas ein paar Grad ab und hält ein bereits kaltes Glas etwa fünfzehn bis zwanzig Minuten kalt. Er ist ein Kühler, kein Kühlschrank: Ein zimmerwarmes Glas wird damit nicht eiskalt. Was er nie tut: in deinem Wein schmelzen. So schmeckt der letzte Schluck wie der erste.

Massiver Edelstahl 304, durch und durch

Jeder Würfel besteht aus einem Stück lebensmittelechtem Edelstahl 304 – der Güte, die in Profiküchen und in der Lebensmittelverarbeitung eingesetzt wird –, quadratisch auf 2,6 cm gefertigt und spiegelnd poliert. Nichts ist beschichtet, hohl oder mit Kunststoffkern, also gibt es keine Beschichtung, die abnutzt, und keinen Eigengeschmack. Edelstahl dieser Güte rostet nicht, bildet keine Löcher, splittert nicht und nimmt keine Gerüche aus dem Gefrierfach an. Für die Box, die nicht in den Kühlschrank passt

Drei Liter Weiß- oder Roséwein in der Box belegen ein ganzes Fach, also steht die Box meist zimmerwarm auf der Arbeitsplatte. Kühle das Glas statt der Box, und das Problem ist weg. Einschenken, zwei oder drei Würfel hineingeben – und der Kühlschrank bleibt frei.

Bei den Sets mit 8 und 12 Würfeln ist die Zange mit Silikonspitzen ohne Aufpreis dabei – so musst du gefrorenen Stahl nicht mit warmen Fingern aus der Box pulen. Das Glas, das stehen bleiben darf

Das erste Glas schenkst du richtig kalt ein. Dann fängt jemand an zu erzählen, die Teller kommen auf den Tisch, die Sonne wandert – und zwanzig Minuten später hat das Glas in deiner Hand die Temperatur des Nachmittags. Warmer Weißwein wird breit und leicht süßlich, Rosé verliert seine Kante, Schaumwein wird weich. Eis würde die Temperatur retten und alles andere ruinieren, weil das letzte Drittel im Glas zu Wasser wird. Zwei gefrorene Edelstahlwürfel übernehmen nur den kalten Teil. Hineingleiten lassen – und das Glas bleibt ungefähr da, wo du es eingeschenkt hast. Leise, ohne einen einzigen Tropfen mehr. Die zweite Hälfte schmeckt wie die erste.

Wein aus der Box ist inzwischen richtig gut geworden – nur teilen sich drei Liter davon kein Fach mit der Milch, den Resten und dem, was seit letzter Woche ganz hinten steht. Also steht die Box zimmerwarm auf der Arbeitsplatte, und jedes Glas kommt lauwarm heraus. Kühle das Glas statt der Box: einschenken, zwei oder drei Würfel direkt aus dem Gefrierfach hineingeben – und der Wein wird genau dort ein paar Grad kälter, wo du ihn trinkst. Wie kalt wird der Wein wirklich?

Sie sind ein Kühler, kein Kühlschrank. In ein bereits kaltes Glas gegeben, halten sie die Kälte. In ein zimmerwarmes Glas gegeben, nehmen sie ein paar Grad ab und machen es spürbar besser – eiskalt wird ein warmes Glas damit aber nicht. Wenn du es richtig kalt willst, fang mit gekühltem Wein an und halte ihn damit kalt.

Wie lange hält die Kühlung?

Etwa fünfzehn bis zwanzig Minuten pro Glas, bevor die Temperatur wieder steigt – je nachdem, wie warm es ist und wie viele Würfel du nimmst. Das entspricht ungefähr der Lebensdauer eines Glases. Für einen langen Abend draußen nimmst du fürs nächste Glas einfach zwei frische aus dem Gefrierfach.

Wie lange müssen sie ins Gefrierfach?

Mindestens vier Stunden, über Nacht ist besser. Zwischen zwei Gläsern brauchen sie ein paar Stunden zum Nachkühlen – der Hauptgrund, warum die meisten das Set mit 8 oder 12 nehmen: Eine Portion ist im Einsatz, während die andere wieder kalt wird. Aufbewahrt werden sie in der verschließbaren Box, die jedem Set beiliegt.

Wie viele nehme ich pro Glas?

Zwei oder drei in ein normales Glas Weiß- oder Roséwein, drei oder vier in ein größeres Glas. Bei Schaumwein lässt du sie vorsichtig hineingleiten, damit die Perlage erhalten bleibt. Sind sie in dünnen Gläsern sicher?

Mit etwas Sorgfalt ja. Stahl ist schwerer als Eis und rutscht, also lass die Würfel mit der Zange hineingleiten, statt sie fallen zu lassen, und kippe das Glas beim letzten Schluck langsam, statt es zurückzuwerfen. Behandle ein dünnes Glas so, wie du es ohnehin behandeln würdest – dann gibt es kein Problem.

Wie reinige ich sie?

Von Hand mit warmem Wasser und einem Tropfen Spülmittel abspülen, abtrocknen und direkt zurück in die Box und ins Gefrierfach. Nicht in die Spülmaschine – der Reiniger ist zu scharf für eine Spiegelpolitur. Es gibt keine Beschichtung, die abgehen kann, und Edelstahl 304 verfärbt sich nicht und nimmt keine Gerüche an. Abspülen reicht also wirklich.

It won't rescue a warm box, and I'd assumed it would

Start bigger than I did

Fair warning if you're eyeing up the 2 cube set the way I did.
